Sometimes life happens. You cannot control it and it sneaks up on you in a way that you cannot expect. Ashlee & Wes recently took on renovating a new home. Most people when they choose to renovate a new home pick one that needs some minor cosmetic damage but not these two. They picked the “go big or go home!” house. The home needed basement walls moved, entire rooms gutted and a whole list of things to keep them busy. We knew that once they started remodeling that scheduling engagement photos would be tricky so we scheduled their session months in advance.
Then life happened. More specifically mother nature decided to drop a 1,000 year flood in our lap 3 days before their engagement session. The next few days became a blur until mid-week it dawned on Ashlee and me that we had FORGOT their engagement session. Before you judge us you have to understand that hundreds of homes were lost in our county, at least two schools, Ashlee’s church had flood damage… essentially an entire community was destroyed in a day. Engagement photos fell to the side. Their “go big or go home” house remodel was put on pause. Life stopped in Elkview, WV.
As life tends to do the pause button was only pushed momentarily. A few weeks later we piled in Wes’ car and started our adventure to Ashlee’s friend’s land for their engagement photos. This amazing couple who put their life on pause to help support their community over the last few weeks were finally celebrating their love and upcoming wedding. I cannot think of a more deserving couple.
We kept their session very low-key at the request of Wes. We threw a blanket on the ground, enjoyed a lot of laughs and even brought out Ashlee’s grandad’s guitar for Wes to play. I always love engagement sessions but theirs was special. After weeks of life throwing lemons our way, we had a break from everything to laugh and enjoy ourselves for a moment. It was nice to realize that sometimes life happens. Sometimes you have no choice but to hit the pause button and wait but soon or later your engagement photos will happen and when they do they’ll be magical.
